Safe Driving During Icy Conditions

Winter is here, which means that the roads in Burlington, NC can get icy. At Don Allred Insurance, we want our clients and their families to be safe while on the road this winter.  While it is best to avoid driving at all during icy conditions, here are some tips for safe driving should you find yourself on an icy road.

Tip #1: Pay Attention to the Weather Conditions.

Check the weather for Burlington, NC before heading out on the road. If you are not familiar with the different terms describing winter weather, such as advisory/watch/warning, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with them. 

Tip #2: Slow down.

Driving at high speeds on icy roads is dangerous. It is best to keep your vehicle at a maximum speed of 45 miles per hour, even on the highway during icy conditions.

Tip #3: Don’t Press Hard on the Brakes When You Encounter Ice.

Unfortunately, anti lock brakes do not always work well on snow and ice so go easy on the brakes. This will help to prevent slides and loss of the control of your vehicle.

Tip #4: Turn Your Wheels in the Direction that the Rear of Your Car is Sliding.

For sliding and fishtailing, it probably means you are going too fast. Driving slow will help to avoid fishtailing. However, if you do slide, try and turn into the slide.

Tip #5:  Accidents on Icy Roads Often Happen in Multiples.

If you do get into an accident on an icy road, make sure you know what to do to stay safe. Other out-of-control vehicles can hit your stranded vehicle after the initial accident occurs. Keep driving to safety if you can and call your agent at Don Allred Insurance as soon as possible.
